SS16 Blitzboks; South Africa Rugby Sevens

 

The Blitzboks famously represent South African Rugby in the Sevens format of Rugby Union. Due to the shorter format, Rugby sevens is an entertaining and skilful contest with an intensified tempo of play. A tradition of Rugby sevens is vibrant jersey designs adding to the sport’s increasing global appeal. The primary aim for the federation in this brief was for the jersey to be instantly identifiable to the Springboks. The seasonal direction developed was centred around ‘Identity’, this allowed bilateral stories to be told in a singular narrative. The idea was to visually reference the two syllables that make up the word ‘Blitzbok’. The first syllable was interpreted into a moire pattern that portrays dynamics and movement, the second syllable took reference to the federation with a bespoke interpretation of the Springbok logo. When both elements merge they create a striking design that embraces the contemporary traditions of Rugby sevens, but also respects the heritage of the South African Rugby Union federation.
