Umbro

2011/12 Manchester City

A graphic designed for the fans; in what fittingly became the most memorable finale in the history of the English Premier League.

This collaborative concept was conceived by Umbro, the idea was based on sound and the impact fans have on the players when they start singing City’s terrance anthem Blue Moon. I was commissioned by Umbro to translate the raw sound wave recording into a sound wave graphic that could be applied primarily onto the home shirt and goalkeeper jersey. My approach was to elevate the concept through simplicity, the visual and micro detail of the graphic was purposely crafted to compliment a historical reference on the shirt. Due to this refined simplicity the graphic was used on macro levels also and became a multi channel branding element for the season. One of the considerations was to encapsulate the optimism of a team on the rise, as they had qualified for the Champions League in the previous campaign. The opportunity for the 2011/12 season was to culturally represent the club in prestigious competitions in both domestic and European campaigns. As fate would have it, the shirt graphic and concept it represented will be forever remembered!. Sergio Aguero famously scored in the fourth minute of added time in the final game of the season to seal the title. The season, that ‘AGUEROOOOO’ moment and the kit are all now written into Manchester City folklore.
